Paris Gargoyle

When we visited Paris a couple of years ago, my daughter Nadia loved the gargoyles on the roof of Notre Dame. She has been fascinated with them ever since. This week she presented me with this drawing of one of her favorite Paris gargoyles. I just had to share it; I think she did an amazing job.

Als wir vor zwei Jahren Paris besuchten, haben meiner Tochter Nadia die Wasserspeier (Gargylen)auf dem Dach von Notre Dame besonders gut gefallen. Sie ist seitdem von ihnen fasziniert. Diese Woche hat sie mich mit dieser Zeichnung eines ihrer liebsten Pariser Wasserspeier ueberrascht. Ich wollte die Zeichnung mit meinen Lesern teilen; ich finde sie so toll.

Embellished Bibs

I had some chenille left, so I made three more bibs. These are embellished. It gets kind of addictive...

Ich habe nochmals drei Laetzchen gemacht, diesmal mit Verzierung. 

Baby Bibs

Recently there have been lots of new babies in our own family and the families of friends. I wanted to make some cute little bibs for the new arrivals. I used chenille on the back, cute cotton print for the front, and Velcro for the closure. These bibs are relatively small; they are best for infants or as drool bibs. Since I no longer have babies in the house and couldn't trace an actual bib, I needed a pattern. Of course, I searched the web and found this free pattern from the Chickpea Sewing Studio. Here are the 6 bibs I made so far.

Es wurden in unserer Familie und der Familien von Freunden in letzter Zeit viele neue Babies geboren. Ich habe fuer die Neuankömmlinge ein paar niedliche kleine Lätzchen genäht. Ich habe Chenille für die Rückseite, Baumwolle für die Vorderseite und Klettband für den Verschluss benutzt. Die Lätze sind relative klein – am besten für jüngere Babies oder als Geiferlatz. Da ich keine Kleinkinder mehr im Haus habe, konnte ich nicht einfach einen Latz zum Muster nehmen. Natürlich habe ich dafür auf dem Internet gesurft und dieses kostenlose Muster vom Chickpea Sewing Studio gefunden. Hier sind die 6 Lätze, die ich soweit genäht habe.

Locker-Hooked Silk Bracelet

It's been a while since I posted. I have been dedicating most of last week to my studies and some home decorating/painting. I did have some time to make this bracelet though. I wanted to learn the locker-hooking technique, so I could make a couple of bathroom rugs. I didn't want to start out with the rugs, but try the technique on something smaller first. So I made this bracelet from a silk scarf I bought in Cambodia last summer. I am quite pleased with the result.

Es ist schon eine Weile her, seit ich geschrieben habe. Ich habe die vergangene Woche hauptsaechlich meinem Studium gewidmet. Allerdings habe ich trotzdem die Zeit gefunden, dieses Armband zu machen. Ich wollte Locker-Hooking lernen, damit ich ein paar Badezimmer-Teppiche herstellen kann. Ich wagte nicht gleich mit den Teppichen zu beginnen, sondern wollte die Technik mit etwas Kleinerem lernen. Also habe ich dieses Armband aus einem Seidenschal, den ich letzten Sommer in Kambodscha gekauft habe, “gehookt”. Ich bin mit dem Ergebnis recht zufrieden.


Here is how I made it...
Hier ist, wie ich das Armband gemacht habe.

First, I learned locker-hooking from this YouTube video tutorial by Beverly Fabrics.

Then I assembled my supplies:

• Silk fabric, cut into 3/4" to 1" strips ( a silk scarf in my case)
• Ribbon yarn
• Locker hook
• Cotton yarn or twine (as locking medium)
• Rug canvas

Zuerst habe ich auf YouTube ein Video gesucht, dass die Technik erklaert. Mit dieser Anleitung von Beverly Fabrics habe ich dann die Rug Hooking Technik gelernt.

Materialien:
•    Seide, in Streifen geschnitten, 2cm-2.5cm (ein Seidenschal in meinem Fall)
•    Bändchengarn (zu den Stoffstreifen)
•    Locker hook (Locker-Haken?)
•    Baumwollgarn
•    Teppich Leinwand

Repurposed Cupcakes and More Snow

Thank goodness no more snow today! We had to do a lot of snow shoveling again after the second Blizzard hit us. It is beautiful today; all that snow against a perfectly blue sky.

Zum Glueck gibt’s heute keinen Schnee mehr! Wir mussten viel Schnee schaufeln nachdem der zweite Blizzard uns getroffen hat. Es ist wunderschön heute: all der Schnee mit perfektem blauem Himmel.

My daughter Celine is a big cupcake fan; she is always trying out new recipes and baking for us. So I thought I'd make her some cupcakes that would last a while and weren't perishable. I used old wool sweaters and felted them in the washing machine (just washed them with hot water and soap and tumble-dried them). Then I cut rectangular pieces (5"x10") from the sweaters, folded them in half and rolled them into cupcakes. The outer layer of the cupcakes is made from the ribbed cuffs of the sweater, and I covered the bottom with a circle cut from the sweater and glued it on. The cupcakes make cute pincushions or decorative items. Celine hasn't seen the cupcakes yet; they are a surprise for Valentine's Day.

Meine Tochter Celine ist ein großer Cupcake Fan; sie probiert dauernd neue Rezepte aus und backt fuer uns. So dachte ich mir, ich wuerde sie mit ein paar Cupcakes ueberraschen, die nicht verderblich sind. Ich habe alte Wollpulver in der Waschmaschine verfilzt (ich wusch sie mit heissem Wasser und Seife und habe sie anschliessend im Waeschetrockner getrocknet). Dann schnitt ich rechteckige Stücke (5"x10"/12.5cmx25cm) aus dem Pullover, faltete sie laengsweis und rollte sie zu Cupcakes. Die äußere Schicht der Cupcakes ist aus dem gerippten Aermelbündchen des Pullovers gemacht, und ich bedeckte den Boden mit einem aufgeklebten Kreis vom “Pulloverstoff”. Die Cupcakes koennen als Nadelkissen oder als Dekoration benutzt werden. Celine hat sie noch nicht gesehen; sie werden eine Valentinstagsueberraschung fuer sie.

Crafty Presents

Yesterday was my birthday and my two girls surprised me with some wonderful crafted gifts.
Nadia made me a gorgeous moon and star ceramic plate. Celine prepared a tasty breakfast of muffins and fruit for me, and she also made me one of her fabulous collage cards.

Gestern war mein Geburtstag und meine zwei Maedels haben mich mit handgefertigten Geschenken ueberrascht. Nadia hat mir einen praechtigen Mond und Sternen Keramikteller geschenkt. Celine hat mich mit einem leckeren Fruehstueck von Muffins und Fruechten ueberrascht und mir eine Collagekarte gebastelt.

 

 

Blizzard

This past weekend brought us a huge snow storm.
Saturday, the state of Delaware declared a snow emergency and only people who had to drive their cars to their jobs such as doctors, nurses, policemen, etc. were allowed on the streets. We got about 60cm (2ft) of snow here in Middletown. Another snowstorm is expected for tonight and all day tomorrow with an additional 30cm (1ft) of snow. What a winter! The girls are excited; school was canceled yesterday and today. They can't remove the snow quick enough. Here in the South nobody is used to so much snow.
Well, this is what we woke up to on Saturday morning. The Blizzard had blown the snow right up onto our windows.

Am vergangenen Wochenende hatten wir einen großen Schneesturm.
Am Samstag durften in Delaware nur Leute wie Ärzte, Krankenschwestern, und Polizisten , die ihre Autos brauchten um ihre Arbeitsplaetze zu erreichen, auf die Strassen. Wir haben über 60cm (2ft) Schnee hier in Middletown. Ein weiterer Schneesturm ist für heute Abend und morgen angesagt und wir muessen mit zusätzlichen 30cm (1 ft) Schnee rechnen. Was für ein Winter! Die Mädchen sind begeistert, sie hatten gestern und heute keine Schule. Der Schnee kann nur langsam geraeumt werden. Hier im Süden rechnet niemand mit so viel Schnee.
Hier  ist, ein Photo vom Samstag morgen als wir aufwachten. Der Blizzard hatte bereits den Schnee ueber unsere Fenster geblasen.

I visited a delightful little quilt show at our town's Art Center today. These pictures are of the quilts I liked best.

Ich besuchte heute eine entzückende kleine Quilt Show im Kunst-Zenter unserer Stadt. Diese Bilder sind von den Quilts die mir am besten gefielen.

Free Form Wrist Warmers

It's been well below freezing here, and I am feeling perpetually cold. I have been wanting to try freeform crochet for a while, so I decided to start with a quick project using some of my left-over yarns. The wrist warmers are the result of my experiment. I like them; they are warm and fuzzy.

In der letzten Woche ist es hier deutlich unter dem Gefrierpunkt gewesen. Ich habe ständig kalt. Da ich schon lange einmal Freiform-Haekeln ausprobieren wollte, habe ich mich entschieden, mit ein paar Wolle- und Garnresten Pulswaermer zu haekeln. Das war eigentlich ganz leicht. Die Pulswaermer sind so schoen warm; gerade recht fuer dieses eisige Wetter!

Baking

I have been baking different breads over the last few days. Today, I made an Apricot-Date Tea Loaf. It's really yummy and quick to make. My family loves it.

Here is the recipe:

1 cup dried apricots
1/2 cup dates
2 cups unbleached white flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup sugar
2 Tbsp melted butter
1 large egg
1/2 cup orange juice
1/3 cup water
1/2 cup ground almonds

Cover apricots with 1 1/2 cups warm water. Let them soak approximately 30 minutes. Drain and cut into fine pieces.
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour an 81/2” x 41/2” loaf pan (or line with baking paper).
Sift flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a medium size mixing bowl.
In another bowl, combine the sugar, butter, egg, 1/3 cup water and orange juice.
When well mixed, add the apricots, dates and almond meal. Mix and pour into pan.
Bake 55 to 60 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on wire rack.
