Gift Idea

This gift is going to.... Well, it's going to someone who likes to sew and craft just like me. I think a bunch of fat quarters always makes a nice gift for a sewer. So I went to the fabric store, looked for some coordinating fabrics, and folded and arranged them on a piece of cardboard at home. The ribbon literally ties it all together. Since I also like to crochet (as you well know), I decided to make some matching crochet flowers that can be used to embellish whatever the receiver of my gift decides to make.

Water Bottle Holder

Summer is just a couple of months away. It gets so hot here and a water bottle is a constant companion when venturing outside and caring a bottle around in your hands can be cumbersome at times. I came across this great tutorial the other day and gave it a try. I followed the easy directions and added one of my crochet trims for embellishments. I am happy with the outcome, and I'll now have my hands free on my summer excursions. I am curious how long the Insul-Bright will keep the water cool.

Trim

I have been trying out some crochet edge trims to embellish future sewing projects. Here are the results:

I used and adapted stitch patterns from these two very useful books:

Virtual Pin Boards

If you are like me, you read a lot of other blogs and search the internet for inspiration, ideas, and instructions. Let me tell you, my bookmarks are getting out of hand! That’s why I started using Pinterest a few days ago, and I love it. It’s more visual than bookmarks. You can create electronic pinboards for different categories and pin whatever you like to them. Have a look at some of my boards:

Schaut euch hier mal einige meiner Pin Boards an:

And a close-up of my crochet board:
Und eine Nahaufnahme von meinem Häkelboard:

You can easily get to the original websites by clicking on the individual pins.
You can also follow other people's boards. Try it out! Just go to Pinterest and request an invite.

Pinterest is free and I have absolutely no stake in it. I just wanted to share a great electronic tool with you.

Elephant for Nora

My niece Rahel gave birth to a beautiful little baby girl two weeks ago and her mom (my sister Heidi) made her this birth announcement for their yard. She cut it from wood and painted the surface. Isn't it beautiful? Welcome Nora Mia Welti!

I sewed this elephant from a Farbenmix pattern for Nora. I used 5" squares from different charm packs instead of just one fabric and crocheted the motifs and eyes. It will need to be stuffed when it gets to Europe (it's easier to ship without the stuffing, not as bulky).

Working on...

It's been rather hectic around my house lately, but I haven't been idle. I am still crocheting away. Here is what I have been up to:

This one has been sewn onto a work in progress (almost finished!)

These crochet motifs all have been made for a special purpose - namely to adorn specific projects I am currently working on (more on that as soon as they are finished). You are probably sick of all my crochet flowers by now. Sorry, but they are addictive! ...and I love the colorful cotton yarn...

Japanese Flower Wrap

I am still fascinated with crochet. I made this Japanese Flower Wrap after reading Lucy's blog post on Attic 24. She herself got the pattern from a French blog. If you are interested in making one of your own, just follow the links. Mine was made from variegated cotton. I've already started a second one in blue/green.

Baby Quilt

This is going to be a baby quilt when it is finished. Along the way, I will be showing you pictures while I am making it. The plan is a colorful tree of life - nothing definite yet. I have a picture of it in my head, but am flexible about the outcome. First, I will hand stitch all the leaves onto the top, then maybe add a couple of birdies...

Colorful Surprise

I feel like a little kid in the candy store - totally excited about the package I received from Germany today! When I started making crochet flowers and ornaments, I ordered this fabulous e-book called Häkelsommer from Farbenmix in Germany (only available in German and Dutch).

I quickly realized that I wouldn't be able to get the high quality  mercerized cotton in the many colors I wanted here in the U.S. The Schachenmayr Catania yarn that was recommended in the e-book came in over 40 colors. I did a little search online and found that Wolle Aktuell sold and shipped the yarn worldwide. The best surprise was the price. Including shipping, the yarn cost less than what I would have paid here for a similar item. Of course, I couldn't help myself and ordered 31 different colors. I am so pleased with them; they are so vibrant and of a wonderful quality. I can't wait to get started on some projects.

Felted Crochet Flowers

First, I made these crochet flowers from 100% wool yarn...

To felt the flowers, I washed them twice on a hot water cycle... This is what they look like after the felting:

The felted flowers can be used as decoration for a number of things. I attached a pin back to a couple, so they can be used as brooches.
